What Is an Aluminum Weather Louver with Mesh?

An aluminum weather louver is an exterior ventilation component installed in wall openings or duct terminations. It consists of a sturdy aluminum alloy frame fitted with angled blades that allow air to pass through while deflecting rain. A wire mesh (bird screen) is integrated behind or in front of the blades to stop birds, insects, leaves and other debris from entering the building or the HVAC equipment behind it. Unlike ordinary grilles, a true weather louver is engineered for three jobs at once: airflow, rain protection and intrusion prevention.

How the Rainproof Blade Design Works

The secret lies in the blade geometry. Blades are angled downward and arranged with overlapping edges, so wind-driven rain that hits the louver is caught on the blade surface and drained back to the outside instead of being carried into the airstream. In North America, weather louvers are tested under ANSI/AMCA Standard 500-L, which covers air performance, water penetration and wind-driven rain resistance. In Europe, EN 13030 is the equivalent testing standard, grading louvers by airflow loss coefficient. When a manufacturer publishes certified test data, you can compare free area, water penetration class and pressure drop objectively instead of guessing.
